Elevator /Background music, refers to a mode of musical performance in which the music is not intended to be a primary focus of potential listeners, but its content, character and volume level are deliberately chosen to affect behavioural and emotional responses in humans such as concentration, relaxation, distraction and excitement.
PS: the fact that it is Called elevator music does not mean it is mainly for elevators. Background music/ elevator music functions for banks, halls , ATMs, restrooms, fitting rooms, airports, music played while on hold on the telephone etc
Have you ever just stood in the elevator and wondered what sort of music is playing ?
I have often found myself in an elevator, going to the 99th floor and I wonder what sort of music is played. imagine going to the 99th floor and Beethoven is playing or some music that sounds like it was pulled out of a Shakespearen book. OMG!!
Although, a lot of people would prefer that sort of music but it doesn't stop the fact that they all sound the same. I obviously will prefer something upbeat and funky. something that doesn't lul me to sleep till I get to the 99th floor and this is where you come in as a creative.
Making money with this as a side gig.
Remember when I said this background music is used for ATMs? There is this GT bank ATM I use in Unilag, and instead of the boring music, they got ASA to do a customised song for their machines. so I'm standing right there, trying to get money, listening to ASA's sonorous voice, singing along even though I could never match the pitch. That alone has woken or evoked some sort of excitement in me. I am currently enjoying the music, my mood is improved and although the machine has swallowed my card, I am not in the least mad at GTB, because they have prepared me. LOL ( ok! seriously! give me back my CARD!!!)
The major function of background music is to elevate moods whether consciously or unconsciously. This is why I see it as a side gig for you as a creative. I know a lot of people who play around with beats and make good music. Walk into that bank or that hall or that office and offer to improve their music and you make more money from it. sell them as many beats as you can, offer to reshuffle their playlist and earn money.
However, you have to consider the environment, you are willing to sell your beat/music to. Don't appear in a banking hall with a Busta Rhyme's sort of sound and tell them Aramide said it was cool ( I will deny you bro)
Figure out the environment, the sort of services rendered and the clientele. You definitely can make calm beats but make it a blend. something not super boring or that sounds like Beethoven and Bach are having a baby.
